Ralf Rangnick: Manchester United will not sell Edinson Cavani in January

As confirmed by reliable journalist Fabrizio Romano on Twitter, Manchester United interim manager Ralf Rangnick has dismissed any notion of Edinson Cavani leaving the club in the January transfer window.

The veteran striker has struggled for game time this season. A mixture of injuries and competition has seen the Uruguayan fall down the pecking order this season.

The 34-year-old has however let his performances on the field do the talking. He came off the bench to score a second-half equaliser in Man United’s draw at Newcastle last week and then partnered Cristiano Ronaldo in attack during the win over Burnley three days later.

Cavani courted controversy when he was pictured waving goodbye to Manchester United fans following the victory against Burnley. He has attracted interest from several clubs including Boca Juniors, Barcelona, and Corinthians, and it only added further fuel to the fire.

Rangnick has now confirmed that the player will stay put at Old Trafford this month. He has also informed the player regarding his importance to the club. If anything, Rangnick has given as definitive an answer as any regarding the striker’s future.

“I told him from the very first day, for me he is a highly important player. He’s staying.”

Rangnick certainly appears to have an excellent opinion of his seasoned veteran. Cristiano Ronaldo is the club’s top scorer this season and has borne the brunt of the team’s goal-scoring responsibilities.

“Cavani will definitely NOT leave in January. We spoke about Edi and he knows that I will definitely not let him go — we will definitely need Edi. He’s amazing.”

Cavani enjoyed a sensational run of form in the second half of the 2020/21 campaign. A similar run of goals this time around would do nicely and could aid us in ending the season strongly- especially as we look to seal a top-four place and hopefully, our 4th UEFA Champions League title.

Cavani has made 49 appearances for Manchester United across all competitions so far. He has scored 19 goals and assisted six more during that time. Given Rangnick’s vote of confidence, it is fair to say that he will still continue to add to his tally in the coming months.

He was a proven goal-getter at Napoli and PSG, and is still Uruguay’s leading man up front alongside Luis Suarez. It is clear that the South American hitman still has a lot of football left in him and hopefully, the next 6 months turns out to be one of the best spells of his career.
