Sevilla enter transfer race for Manchester United striker Edinson Cavani amidst Barcelona and Corinthians interest
According to the journalist Ekrem Konur (h/t ESPN), Sevilla have entered the race to sign Manchester United striker Edinson Cavani amidst interest from Barcelona and Corinthians ahead of the January transfer window. He has struggled to earn minutes this season due to various reasons and has attracted attention for a potential move.
Cavani has a contract with the Red Devils, which will expire at the end of the current season. He could reach a pre-contract agreement with other clubs next month if he wants to move elsewhere. That has naturally resulted in uncertainty surrounding his future at Old Trafford.
The new interest from the Rojiblancos could mean that Man United have some leg room to negotiate should they decide to sell the Uruguayan before his deal expires. Whether a move would happen or not remains to be seen as the winter transfer window draws close with each passing day.
Potential departure?
Even though we have been knocked out of the Carabao Cup, other competitions do add to the congested fixture list that we would face moving forward. As such, the Red Devils striker’s departure could dent our chances of having a great season due to the reduction in depth.
One could consider this as an opportunity to cash in on the veteran before his deal comes to an end. We could offer him an extension if the club wants his services next season, but there has been no real indication of that yet. He has suffered from recurring injuries, which causes concerns considering how he is fast approaching the twilight of his playing career.
Interestingly, United are keeping tabs on Jules Kounde to solidify their backline as they have struggled to keep out goals time and time again. Whether it would play a role in facilitating the transfer of the Uruguay international or not remains to be seen ahead of January.
Ralf Rangnick uses a 4-2-2-2 system which calls for two strikers upfront. Previously, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer had used Cristiano Ronaldo alongside the Uruguay superstar and it ended up being successful for the short time that we got to witness it. But, the sample size to form an opinion is small as the latter had suffered a setback not long after putting an end to that partnership.

If Rangnick could replicate that, we could create a situation where Cavani and Ronaldo- two of the most potent goalscorers in Europe in the past couple of decades- lead our line, albeit for a short time.
Those who watch Cavani know he is a hard worker off the ball. As long as he is scoring and his fitness seems good, age is just a number. We must think long and hard before letting go of a top player like the former PSG and Napoli striker, but it would be understandable if he wanted to leave considering he is struggling to get regular starts recently.
