Marcus Rashford reveals why Christmas period is important for Manchester United

Marcus Rashford has revealed why he believes that the Christmas period is two of the most important phases of a season for Manchester United. He spoke following the reopening of the Carrington training centre after it had to be closed down because of the Covid outbreak within our club’s camp.

Man United have a gap until the next game where they will face Newcastle United in the Premier League. They were previously knocked out of the Carabao Cup competition, which has seen them “earn” this rest. That could be advantageous in a way as it would help them to regroup after being forced not to engage in overly exhausting training sessions.

Speaking in an interview with United Daily (h/t Manchester United official website), Rashford has conveyed that the start and the festive period are the most crucial phases during the course of a campaign. He added that these two determine and shape the course of a team towards the end of the term.

Manchester United star Marcus Rashford says the festive period is one of the most important phases of a season.

“I think the way you start the season and the way you play, and the results you get around the Christmas period, are probably the two most important points [in the season]. So, if we have a good Christmas period now, then we can keep that momentum going and that will take you into the big games where the trophies are, come the end of the season.”

You know what to do

The festive period is even more crucial for us because of the arrival of Ralf Rangnick and how he would shape the team moving forward. That would allow him to test the entire squad and form an assessment on every single player. The fact that the January transfer window follows it makes it even more critical for the fringe players.

We would have lost some time for making fast progress under Rangnick due to Carrington getting shut down. It also robbed the opportunity for the German to instil his ideas within the team in a timely manner. And then there is the added issue of fixture congestion in the future due to the postponed games.

To overcome all this, we need to build momentum through good performances, and the players need to step up to the plate. The performance in our last match was a bit timid compared to what the expectations were, and we should do better than that. Time will tell how we get through the festive period as the matches are set to follow at an alarming rate.
