Transfer News: Manchester United to battle Paris Saint-Germain for Lazio midfielder Sergej Milinkovic-Savic

According to the journalist Nicolo Schira (h/t ESPN), Manchester United will battle Paris Saint-Germain for the services of Lazio midfielder Sergej Milinkovic-Savic at the end of the current season. He was a transfer target for Man United in the past, but a move never came to materialise.

Milinkovic-Savic could end up leaving his current club in the summer of 2022, but any potential transfer would end up being expensive. The Serie A club put a price tag of around €70million-€80million to sell him at the end of the current campaign. United had previously tried to sign him in 2019 for €60million, but they failed in doing so.

The Red Devils would face tough competition from PSG and would need to be ready to take their chances. The former lack quality in their depth and would need some additions if they hope to return to their glory days. The 26-year-old could offer that, but things are far from finalised for him to move to Old Trafford.

All In?

We might require the Serie A superstar’s services depending on the future of some of the players in the current squad. Paul Pogba is in the last year of his contract and could end up leaving in the summer if he does not want to continue here. That alone creates an issue where we would have to look at options to replace him.

The Serb would offer dependability in midfield, plus his ability to chip in with some goals would be a valuable asset to have when required. His dynamic runs from midfield combined with his imposing frame could help in disrupting the opponents’ defences.

Le Aquile midfielder has scored 52 goals alongside 44 assists throughout his time in Italy, showcasing how effective he is on that front. He could alleviate some pressure from Bruno Fernandes’ shoulders, who had to carry the team at times from midfield to have some goal involvements.

The Lazio star’s versatility could give Ralf Rangnick the option to use him as an attacking midfielder in the 4-2-2-2 system. At the same time, he could also pair with Fred or Scott McTominay and progress the ball from midfield. There have been times when we have found it tough to build the play from the back through a press.

The Serbian could be a solution to much of our problems, but it remains to be seen whether Rangnick would approve of the signing or not. Should Pogba end up staying and renew his contract, there would be questions about whether we could facilitate a potential transfer looking at the financial cost on our wage bill.

But it’s fair to say the whole Pogba situation has really tired out a big part of our fanbase and some would have been made peace with the possibility of him leaving. In that case, why not bring in players that actually want to play for the badge and have a role to play in our future?
