Club legend Bryan Robson believes Manchester United have an advantage over UCL opponents Atletico Madrid in last 16 tie

According to the club’s official site, Manchester United legend Bryan Robson has opened up on the advantage that the Red Devils hold over Atletico Madrid in the UEFA Champions League.

The Red Devils were initially drawn against Paris Saint-Germain before the draw was voided for certain technicalities. Any hope Man United had of a breather was extinguished when they were drawn against Spanish champions Atletico Madrid.

Diego Simeone’s side is one of the most difficult teams to play against and will present a formidable challenge to Ralf Rangnick’s men. The La Liga winners barely scraped through following a matchday six win over Porto. However, they certainly pack a punch on their day.

The Red Devils will play the second leg at home courtesy of them qualifying as group winners. Robson believes this could help swing the tie in his former side’s favour.

“When you go into a game like this one, I am really pleased we have got the away game first.”

The first leg will take place at the Wanda Metropolitano Stadium on Wednesday 23 February, before the return fixture is held at Old Trafford on Tuesday 15 March.

While Robson believes Atletico are formidable opponents, he believes Man United have enough in their tank to see off the Spanish challenge. Cristiano Ronaldo has in the past broken Atletico hearts numerous times and will hopefully do so once again this season.

“It will be a tough game for the boys and a different type of game to PSG. But I still feel we have got enough in our squad to go on and get through the tie.”

With the away goals rule no longer in use, it remains to be seen if Simeone’s men will go all out in both games. Having seen his side struggle against Liverpool and AC Milan, it remains to be seen what the Argentine manager does ahead of the game against Man United.

Atletico are traditionally one of the toughest teams to face, especially if one does not have the stomach for a fight. They have, however, shed the cloak of invincibility this season and are far from their best. Perhaps there are more advantages than one for us being drawn against them this season.

And if we have to be the best, we will have to beat the best. If we want to become the Man United side that reached 3 UCL finals in four years under Sir Alex Ferguson, we should not be bothered too much about who we draw.
