Transfer News: Barcelona target Manchester United forward Marcus Rashford

According to the Catalan news outlet El Nacional (h/t ESPN), Manchester United forward Marcus Rashford is a target for Barcelona, who are suffering from an injury crisis at their forward line. Memphis Depay is the recent addition to the injury woes after picking up a hamstring injury against Bayern Munich.

Rashford has featured in 11 matches this season and has three goals and one assist in the process. Looking at his minutes, though, he played only a bit over six games throughout this campaign. However, he suffered from a shoulder injury early this term which forced him to miss much of the action.

The Englishman was involved in every match bar the recent game against Young Boys since his return but faces added competition due to the summer signings. Cristiano Ronaldo and Jadon Sancho have joined our ranks recently, whereas Mason Greenwood has impressed during his recent outing in the Champions League.

Marcus Rashford to Barcelona is a potential transfer?

Barca are very much interested in him, and Man United could part ways with the attacker for a fee of around €70million. The Spanish club’s financial woes are well documented, and it remains to be seen if they can conjure up such an amount for the England international.

Can’t afford to let Rashford go

There are other options in the forward line such as Edinson Cavani, Jesse Lingard, Ronaldo, Sancho, Greenwood, and Anthony Martial. But Ronaldo is ageing, Cavani and Lingard are out of contract next summer, while Martial’s record in front of the goal hasn’t been the best in the last 12 months or so.

Rashford is a product of our youth academy and it is not wrong to say that he has blossomed into one of the most feared PL attackers. Having been with us for years, he knows the club well and understands what it means to play for a club of our stature.

If we are to want to contend for trophies again, it is highly advised for us to retain our best players. Instead of seeing our best players leave, we should be constantly looking to strengthen ourselves.

And as fans, we should take such news with a pinch of salt. There is nothing explicit that Rashford has done to suggest that he would want an exit and with his contract only expiring in the summer of 2023, there is still a bit of time before we actually have to start worrying about his contract situation.
