Transfer News: Newcastle ready to make Manchester United forward Jesse Lingard their highest-ever earner
According to The Times (Subscription Required), Newcastle United are prepared to make Manchester United attacker Jesse Lingard their highest earner in history if he signs for them. He has been on Man United’s sidelines for quite some time as he struggled to break into the team and earn regular minutes.
Lingard will see his contract with the Red Devils expire at the end of the season. There were negotiations over an extension, but it broke down last month due to disagreements. That has seen the club at the risk of losing him on a free next summer.
However, Newcastle are ready to offer a substantial fee in January as the Englishman tops their list of transfer targets, with the Toons looking to avoid the drop after their recent takeover. They are open to giving him a massive deal, which would make him the top earner in their squad.
Talks have already taken place between the United star’s representatives and the Magpies over the monetary terms. He got offered a four-and-a-half-year contract with his wages comfortably eclipsing the £100,000-a-week salary of Miguel Almirón, the current highest-earner.
West Ham United are also keeping tabs on the 28-year-old, with him having impressed on loan in the second half of last season under David Moyes. He had a tally of nine goals and five assists from 16 appearances, as he helped the Hammers qualify for the UEFA Europa League.
Win-win situation
As the 2022 Qatar World Cup is on the horizon, the England ace would want consistent game time if he hopes to earn a spot in Gareth Southgate’s squad. And if Ralf Rangnick does not count on his services, it could prompt the club to sell him in the winter transfer window so as to not to lose him for free next summer- after all, that makes sense financially considering he isn’t really a starting XI player for us.

The stance from the Toons could not favour us more as it could help in starting a bidding war against West Ham if they show similar interest. However, there is no real indication of that happening right now.
We could, however, earn a decent sum for someone who would be a free agent in the summer if he doesn’t put pen to paper on a new deal. If this scenario is how it turns out in January, all parties involved in the transfer would be happy with the outcome except for the competition- granted the Englishman actually wants a move to St. James’ Park.
