David Moyes disappointed for Manchester United star Jesse Lingard amidst links to West Ham United

Manchester United forward Jesse Lingard had a great time on loan at West Ham United under David Moyes last season. He rekindled what appeared to be a flagging career during his stint at the London Stadium. Lingard played 16 matches for the Irons and scored nine goals with five assists to boot.

Lingard’s contribution helped the Hammers qualify for the UEFA Europa League, which was an impressive milestone for them. He was in line to a permanent move following the loan, but Man United had priced the Hammers out of making their move. He has struggled for minutes at Old Trafford this season, featuring across just 178 minutes from a mere 11 matches.

According to Daily Mail Online, Moyes expressed his feelings on the Englishman’s lack of minutes. The former Man United boss has a good impression of the Englishman’s abilities. The West Ham manager also acknowledged the Englishman’s contributions that helped his team last season.

“HE PLAYED A BIG PART IN OUR SECOND HALF OF LAST SEASON. BUT YOU’D HAVE TO GIVE CREDIT TO THE PLAYERS HERE, THEY’VE MOVED ON WITHOUT JESSE. BUT I’VE GOT TO SAY, JESSE WAS A BIG PART OF THAT.”

Moyes was understandably guarded in his comments regarding a player who features for a rival team. He believes that the player is aware of what the Hammers think of him and also expressed his disappointment that a player of his calibre does not feature regularly.

“I can’t really talk about him because he’s a Manchester United player and it’s not for me to talk. But he was really good for us. Jesse knows what we all think of him here. My disappointment for Jesse would be, I think he’s such a talented football player and he’s not playing.”

Potential return?

While the Hammers coach did not address the links suggesting a return, he did convey that putting Lingard on the bench is a waste of his quality. That is not an exaggeration given the 28-year-old’s performances last season. We cannot rule out whether it is a message to the England international as Moyes’s intentions remain unclear.

It remains to be seen if there is a change in Lingard’s fortunes under Ralf Rangnick and. With the transfer window drawing close, we could have a clearer idea of where his future would lie.

He did impress by scoring two goals and an assist in the short time he got on the pitch. Ole Gunnar Solskjaer never gave Lingard enough chances to capitalise on that, which has led to this situation. As his contract will expire in the summer, it would be wise to resolve the situation in January to prevent losing him as a free agent.
