“We will see”- Rangnick refuses to close door over becoming permanent Man United manager

Ralf Rangnick does not rule out a permanent role at Manchester United

Ralf Rangnick has been appointed as the interim manager of Manchester United on a six months contract. Following that period, he has a clause in his deal that would make him a consultant at the club for two more years. He will replace Michael Carrick, who managed his last game in the 3-2 win against Arsenal.

Speaking in a press conference (h/t BBC), Rangnick does not rule out a permanent role as the manager of the Red Devils in the future. It was his first press conference after officially taking the temporary job. He was the head of sports and development at Lokomotiv Moscow before taking on this challenge.

The German will be managing his first match against Crystal Palace in the Premier League on Sunday. He will have certain expectations for this season even though he has not been at a traditionally ‘big’ European club in the past. However, he is a highly respected figure across German football for his contributions to the sport.

“If everything goes well I might make the same recommendation that I did at RB Leipzig twice – that it might be a good idea to keep working with me for one year. The people with whom I have spoken have been very clear we are speaking of a six-month role as manager.”

“We have never spoken about what will happen in the summer. Right now, I’m fully aware that they might be looking for a new manager. If they will then speak with me about that, we will see. For me, now it is about winning the next games and this is the major focus.”

Future manager?

The 63-year-old has done a great job at different clubs like RB Leipzig, Hoffenheim and Schalke, where he changed their fortunes. Recently, he has taken roles that have seen him get involved with activities that run the club. His comments tell us that he is thinking about the different possibilities and keeping his options open.

His current stance shows how he is already thinking about the future to deal with potential issues. If we cannot get a permanent manager next season or have no good options, it would be wise to stick with him.

We are excited to think about the changes the club would go through both on and off the pitch. However, we should not get carried away and take it on a game by game basis as we still can end up having a great season.
