Edinson Cavani wants to leave Manchester United to join Barcelona in the summer

According to The Times [Subscription Required], Edinson Cavani wants to leave Manchester United in the summer to secure his dream move to Barcelona. He has been a long term target for the Spanish club, and with this new development, his future at Old Trafford could nearing its end.

The Uruguayan joined the Red Devils on a free transfer after leaving Paris Saint-Germain in 2020. He had initially joined on a one year deal before agreeing to an extension ahead of this season. However, he will become a free agent next summer, which could prompt a move to La Liga.

Following the move to Old Trafford, he has featured in 47 matches and has a goal involvement of 18 goals and six assists across all competitions. He has been a successful signing for us and has quickly won over the fans through his ability and high work rate. However, he has had a diminished role this season following the arrival of Cristiano Ronaldo and Jadon Sancho in the sumemr.

The Uruguayan has suffered from injuries this season, further adding to his lack of minutes on the field. As Barca are in a financial crisis, a January transfer is not probable. A summer move for free would be a viable option for them. The player despite his age appears to be in top shape. There is no reason why he cannot leave a mark at the Nou Camp.

A blow for Man United?

The 34-year-old has given his all since signing for us and deserves a special mention. But with him struggling with injuries this term, it would be wise to look at life past him as we have enough options in our squad. With Ronaldo starting upfront and Sancho looking like his old self, it could be curtains for the striker.

However, he could still have a future here if Ralf Rangnick decides that he wants the centre-forward’s services. We know how good the Man United ace is in his pressing, which suits Rangnick’s infamous gegenpressing tactic. But, that would depend on whether the Uruguay international can find his fitness again. After all the intense pressing is not for the faint of heart.

The German’s heavy metal tactics take a toll on the body, and the players need to be at their best to cope with it. The Man United forward may be looking at his last days here if he is not in the plans of the new interim manager.

At 34, Cavani is nearing the end of his career. Man United too are better off bringing in a younger replacement who can aid the club for years to come.
