Some Manchester United fans react on Twitter as Cristiano Ronaldo and Bruno Fernandes fail to guide Portugal past Serbia in World Cup decider
As confirmed by the official Twitter account of Manchester United, Cristiano Ronaldo and Bruno Fernandes failed to get Portugal past Serbia in the World Cup decider.
It was a tough night to digest, but it was a result that was always coming. Portugal could not put the game to bed against the Republic of Ireland in midweek to seal qualification to the 2022 World Cup. All they had to do against Serbia on Sunday was to avoid defeat.
The hosts also got off to a good start after Bernardo Silva managed to capitalize on a mistake. The Man City midfielder picked the pocket of Nemanja Gudelj and turned the ball to Renato Sanches. The bustling midfielder ran through on goal and slotted home in the second minute of the game.
It felt like a foregone conclusion after that but Serbia managed to hold the lion’s share of possession. Dusan Tadic came close to equalizing before actually doing so a couple of minutes later. However, the ball went in, thanks to a blunder by Rui Patricio.
Regardless, Portugal had to hold on, and they did a good job of it. Fernando Santos also brought in United playmaker Bruno Fernandes in the second half to find the winner. But it was Aleksander Mitrovic that leapt high in added time to steal the game and automatic qualification to the World Cup.
Ronaldo looked a disgruntled figure in the centre of the pitch as he could not believe that Serbia made their way back into the game. Nevertheless, they shall now have to defeat a team in the playoffs in March.
Let us now see how some of the fans reacted on Twitter to the United duo failing to seal automatic qualification to the 2022 World Cup.
