Serbia offered pay reward to stop Manchester United and Portugal national team ace Cristiano Ronaldo from winning in World Cup qualifier
According to Cabine Desportiva (h/t The Mirror), Serbia have been offered a huge pay reward to beat Portugal national team, starring Manchester United ace Cristiano Ronaldo, in their World Cup qualifier decider.
The Portuguese national team shall host Serbia at the Estadio da Luz on Sunday. The two teams are level on points in their group, but Cristiano Ronaldo & co are ahead on goal difference.
They will be hoping to maintain that margin by avoiding defeat against Serbia on the weekend. This match comes after they failed to pull off a win against the Republic of Ireland in mid-week.
Ronaldo could not find his scoring boots, and the selection on the day by Fernando Santos was quite confusing. Diogo Jota, Renato Sanches, and Joao Cancelo were all benched for the game, albeit they were bordering on suspension.
They escaped defeat against Ireland after Matt Doherty’s added-time winner was cancelled out but shall be up against it on the weekend. Serbia would want to claim the top spot on the table, but they have bigger incentives to win the game.
The Serbian FA brokered a deal with the country’s government that victory in this game will earn the players €1million. This is a massive motivational tool to stop the men in red from winning on the weekend.

However, to do so, they shall have to stop Ronaldo from scoring. The 36-year-old has been in sensational form this season, having scored 9 goals in 12 games for the Red Devils. Moreover, he has always shown up for them in the big games and has produced clutch moments.
The Portuguese international would be looking to do the same again on Sunday as he looks for his 800th career goal – a massive feat for any player in the sport.
