Has Harry Kane overtaken Manchester United legend Wayne Rooney for England goals record?

According to talkSPORT, Harry Kane has surpassed Manchester United legend Wayne Rooney in competitive goals for the England national team in their 5-0 win against Albania in the 2022 Qatar World Cup Qualifiers.

The England captain has endured a tough season so far for Tottenham Hotspur, where his struggles in the Premier League has been well known. Having scored just once in the league from ten appearances, he has been a shadow of his previous season.

Kane scored a hat-trick against the Shqiponjat and put off the pressure that was on his head. Having netted thrice in the game, he made a mark in the history of his nation by surpassing Rooney for the most competitive goals.

The 28-year-old now has 38 goals from 54 competitive games, which makes him the highest amongst the bunch. He also joined Jimmy Greave for total goals across all competitions, with 44 goals to his name.

Rooney still reigns supreme

The former Red Devils superstar still edges the Tottenham Hotspur striker in total goals as he has 53 goals for the Three Lions. However, it is expected that the Spurs ace will soon beat that historic mark if he continues to keep up this scoring rate.

The England striker also became the first player to score ten goals in a calendar year for his national team in over 100 years. It shows his incredible scoring rate and with him only being 28, the expectations of him breaking the record is understandable.
