Expert claims Newcastle United could beat Manchester United to the signing of Atletico Madrid ace Kieran Trippier
Speaking to Radio 5Live (h/t The Sun), Spanish football expert Guillem Balague has claimed that Newcastle United could sign Kieran Trippier from Atletico Madrid amidst transfer interest from Manchester United.
The 31-year-old left Tottenham Hotspur in 2019 to move across countries and join Atletico. The full-back has been a revelation for the Spanish side after he helped them win the La Liga title last season.
Trippier provided 6 assists in 28 league appearances last campaign but is yet to contribute to a single goal in 14 appearances across all competitions this season. However, that has not stopped Newcastle United from trying to secure a deal for the right-back in January, with the Geordies already holding talks with the player’s representatives.
Spanish football expert Guillem Balague made the claim regarding the Magpies’ interest in the Atletico star during an interview with Radio 5Live (h/t The Sun).
“I hear from Atletico Madrid that Newcastle are really interested in getting Trippier, and they have started negotiations with his people. I am not sure if they will get him or not.”
The news shall be a blow to Man United, who tried to orchestrate a deal for the English international earlier in the summer. Ole Gunnar Solskjaer identified the full-back as somebody who could provide competition to Aaron wan-Bissaka on the right-hand side, after the 23-year-old’s less than convincing performances in the attacking phase of the game.
In fact, the former Spurs man also wanted to make the move to Old Trafford, but that move never took off the ground.

It is, however, likely that the La Liga outfit shall allow their prized asset to leave in the upcoming transfer windows as he will only have 18 months left on his deal in January 2022, with a fee in the range of £22million believed to be the asking price.
It will now be down to United to compete with the Toon Army for the right-back’s signature– which could very well be a clever decision, especially if they hope to deliver the likes of Cristiano Ronaldo and Edinson Cavani quality service in the box from both their full-backs.
