Manchester United decided against extending contract of Paul Pogba in 2019 despite player’s willingness

According to the Daily Mail, Manchester United decided against extending the contract of Paul Pogba in 2019 despite the player approaching the club over a new deal.

The 28-year-old joined in a mammoth fee from Juventus back in 2016 and has since produced stellar performances but has also received mass criticism for his shoddy displays against the big teams.

The Frenchman was a mainstay under Jose Mourinho and remained one under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer. In fact, Pogba hit his professional peak back in 2018, after he helped United finished 2nd in the league and later went on to lift the World Cup with France.

His stock was certainly high back then, and several clubs were vying for the player’s signature in the summer of 2019. However, the midfielder instead wanted to sign a contract extension at Old Trafford and commit his future to the club.

United, on the other hand, declined this approach and opted for triggering a one-year extension on his contract in 2020. This seems to be a costly mistake now, given that the French international could depart the club on a free transfer at the end of the season.

The Red Devils did offer the former Juventus man a new deal in the summer, but Pogba did not wish to sign that specific contract and is thought to be waiting on another offer, with the club yet to present him with a second proposition.

The player remains open to an extension, and his camp is unhappy over claims that he was always trying to leave the Manchester-based outfit. The club now risks losing one of its superstars for nothing next summer.

However, it goes to show the kind of heartache we would have been spared had a deal been agreed between the concerned parties back in 2019 itself.
