Manchester United squad left confused by Ole Gunnar Solskjaer over the treatment of Jesse Lingard

According to The Athletic (Subscription Required [h/t The Express], Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has left the Manchester United squad bewildered and ‘confused’ over the use of Jesse Lingard despite his encouraging performances.

There has been a lot of discontent amongst the players in recent weeks with some members of the squad also turning on the staff and management, and vice versa.

The heavy loss to Liverpool was certainly a traumatic defeat but the effects of it are yet to be seen with Solskjaer still at the helm of things.

However, his treatment of Lingard is now causing a lot of confusion in the squad. The 28-year-old fell down the pecking order last season but earned his place back after an incredible performance with West Ham in the second half of the last campaign.

The Norwegian was determined to keep him at the club beyond this summer despite some fans expecting the attacking midfielder to stay in London. However, the English international took his chance on a new lease of life at his boyhood club, and he has held up his end of the bargain.

Even though he has been afforded only 59 minutes of Premier League football this season, he has managed to score two goals, with one of them being a winner against the Hammers in September.

In fact, his assist for Cristiano Ronaldo’s winner against Villarreal in the Champions League is also proving to be very crucial for the club now. Despite all of this, he has not been provided with a single Premier League start and his future now hangs in the balance amidst his contract expiry in June 2022.

Thus, there are a lot of questions United’s gaffer needs to answer, and the coming weeks shall serve as a testament to whether the 48-year-old can actually address the game-time of all his stars appropriately.
