Manchester United owners, The Glazers, are looking to acquire one of the Indian Premier League (IPL) teams

According to information provided by sources in India to Sportsmail (h/t Daily Mail), The Glazers are looking to add an IPL team to their portfolio after their successful foray in football with Manchester United.

One of the most popular sports to be played across the globe, cricket has fast gained traction and is most commonly played in Asian countries, although England also has a rich history in the game.

The Glazers, who currently own Manchester United and Super Bowl champions Tampa Bay Buccaneers, are looking to make a foray into the world of cricket.

The IPL, which is the most successful competition in T20 cricket, has eight teams vying for the trophy but is now set to add two more participants. The shortlisted cities for the two new teams are Ahmedabad, Lucknow, Indore, Cuttack, Guwahati, and Dharamsala.

The American family have already purchased a tender (ITT) to lodge a bid for one of the two teams, which is said to be valued at more than £300million. However, the purchase of the ITT does not guarantee that a bid shall be made, it is just an expression of interest.

However, they are one of the 18 parties to be interested in acquiring rights to one of the new teams alongside some Indian businessmen and CVC Capital Partners–the private equity firm that have previously invested in Rugby’s Six nations and Premiership.

The Glazers can submit their bid at an auction, which is scheduled to be held on Monday in Dubai, with the announcement of the new ownerships expected to take place on the following day.

If they do manage to acquire one of the franchises, it would be a big boost for United, as their club’s profile will only increase in India. The Red Devils have their footprint all over the world and their owners could now certainly hand them a boost in one of the most prominent countries in the Asian continent.
