Rio Ferdinand believes even Michael Carrick or N’Golo Kante will not make a difference to Manchester United
Speaking on his YouTube channel ‘Vibe with Five’ (h/t The Express), Rio Ferdinand has claimed that even Michael Carrick or N’Golo Kante will not make a difference at Manchester United.
The Old Trafford outfit have picked a poor bunch of results in recent weeks, and the performances have been lacklustre. Their latest defeat to Leicester was an indicator of their lack of pressing and urge to win the ball back.
Ferdinand, in particular, was not impressed with his former club’s off-the-ball work and the shoddy pressing. The club legend has now claimed that the issues for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer lie much deeper, and signing a defensive midfielder will not solve the problem.
The former United centre-back told ‘Vibe with Five’ (h/t The Express):
“We’ve all cried out, all the United fanbase are saying a defensive midfielder is needed. Watching the last few games, I don’t even think that player covers over the cracks.
“No one player can absolutely change everything if the structure of the team isn’t working to the fundamentals, the foundations. One player doesn’t change everything. I go back to my point about pressing. It doesn’t matter if Michael Carrick is playing there or N’Golo Kante is playing there.”

The Manchester-based outfit spent a lot of money this summer and got in quality talent in their frontline as well as in the defence. However, one area that was not addressed was the midfield.
Declan Rice is a player United could sign next summer, but West Ham are apparently likely to demand a club-record fee. Regardless, it remains to be seen whether adding the young Englishman or another defensive midfielder shall actually solve the club’s performance issues.
