Bruno Fernandes was ready to leave Manchester United after the club joined the European Super League
According to The Athletic (h/t The Metro), Bruno Fernandes was ready to hand in a transfer request after he heard that Manchester United had joined the European Super League in April.
In what was a bolt out of the blue, 12 clubs agreed to start a cross-Europe competition, which was not met well by fans.
Manchester United were one of those clubs that agreed to join the breakaway league along with other members of the traditional ‘Top 6’ in English football.
However, this was met with severe backlash as fans raided Old Trafford and walked onto the pitch in protest against the owners and the idea of moving away from the domestic league and the Champions League.
Vice executive chairman Ed Woodward resigned from his role immediately after the fans led the protests. While the club left the breakaway league after the backlash from the fans, the hopes for an ESL are still being led by Real Madrid, Barcelona & Juventus.
However, one player who will leave Old Trafford if United do join them again is Bruno Fernandes. The Portuguese made it crystal clear that he wanted to play no part in such a league as he was ready to hand in a transfer request.
