Alan Shearer highlights what Manchester United did wrong in the summer transfer window
Speaking on Match of the Day this weekend (h/t Metro), Newcastle United legend Alan Shearer claimed that Manchester United made a mistake by not signing a midfielder during the summer transfer window.
The Red Devils had an active few weeks leading up to deadline day as they brought in big names such as Raphael Varane, Jadon Sancho, and Cristiano Ronaldo. The total spend during the summer is believed to have exceeded the £125million mark in transfer fees.
Despite signing two attackers and a centre-back, some raised eyebrows as to why the club did not get a deal across the line for a midfielder. Declan Rice, Yves Bissouma, and Eduardo Camavinga were some of the midfielders linked with an Old Trafford move, but nothing materialized.
And according to Shearer, United repeated the same mistake as they did in the recent past by not signing a central midfielder. His comments do make sense when Man United’s most recent Premier League defeat is taken into account.
Man United to finally go for a midfielder?
“That was Manchester United’s problem last season, they didn’t invest in that position and it’s the same again. There’s no one in there to really press and take control from the front. You can’t do that in the Premier League.”
Paul Pogba and Nemanja Matic were overrun in midfield by Leicester City, who ran out 4-2 winners. The entire blame cannot be placed on them as the attackers did not provide a lot of help in defence, but midfield is one area that seems to have troubled the club this season on occasions.
“They will always score, Man United, because of the brilliance they have going forward. But you cannot press if you haven’t got that aggression.”

Scoring twice and still losing by two goals is a scenario almost unacceptable for any fan that supports this great club. The loss against Leicester showed that United could still improve in their midfield and hopefully, Solskjaer takes note and addresses the situation in January.
