Manchester United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is considering changing the formation amidst injury troubles
According to The Athletic (Subscription Required) [h/t The Express], Manchester United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is set to change his formation amidst the club’s recent injury troubles at the back.
It has not been a good week for United fans as they lost Raphael Varane to injury and picked up a 4-2 to Leicester City on the weekend.
The French international is said to be out for a few weeks, and that could mean problems for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, given that they are set to face Atalanta, Man City, Liverpool, and Tottenham Hotspur in the next three weeks.
Solskjaer to change formation?
Although Harry Maguire did make a return against his former club after recovering from his calf issue, he looked off the paces. Regardless, this has led to Solskjaer thinking about approaching games differently, and perhaps a change may be made soon.
The Norwegian is considering changing formations and revert to a three-man defence instead of a two-centre-back method, according to The Athletic (h/t The Express).
While United do possess Victor Lindelof, Eric Bailly, and Phil Jones as other options in the defence, the latter duo is yet to make a Premier League start this season. Maguire did not look comfortable alongside Lindelof against Leicester, and perhaps three centre-backs could shore up the backline.

In fact, it is also said that the 48-year-old manager is ready to use Nemanja Matic and Luke Shaw as ‘auxiliary centre-backs’ if push comes to shove. Shaw has featured in that position before and could do so once again while the wing-backs could provide a lot of width.
However, this could create a problem in the frontline as there are several attackers who are vying for game-time. The competition for places up top is extremely high, and if the formation is changed, it remains to be seen who Solskjaer fields in the forward-line.
