Manchester United to offer new contracts to Michael Carrick and Kieran McKenna
According to BBC (h/t Express), Manchester United are set to offer new contracts to Michael Carrick and Kieran McKenna.
The duo is a member of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s backroom staff and the club’s approach appears to hint at the faith they have in the Norwegian. Solskajer has come under fire after United were subject to unsavoury results in the past few weeks.
Carrick represented the club as a player with distinction before joining as a coach in 2018. He survived Jose Mourinho’s sacking and has since grown in stature under Solskjaer.
McKenna meanwhile started off with the club’s Under-18 side before taking the step up to the senior side alongside Carrick in 2018. Both appear to have enough of an impression to warrant fresh terms.
The duo’s news comes on the heels of United extending Mike Phelan’s contract until 2024. A long servant to the club, the 59-year-old has been part of the backroom staff since the days of Sir Alex Ferguson.
Solskjaer himself had his contract extended until 2024 earlier in the summer. Whether McKenna and Carrick will be handed a similar timeframe remains to be seen. Whether this is just a plan to keep the core team together or a warning that they have until 2024 to turn the tide remains to be seen.

Outgoing senior executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward had openly preached his belief in the club’s managerial staff. He believes that results have been improving and there is real hope that the team can turn around its fortunes in the seasons to come.
“Ole and his staff have worked tirelessly putting the foundations in place for long-term success on the pitch.”
One way to attain stability is tying down the key members of the team to new contracts so there is no insecurity about the personnel’s future at the club. That applies to players as well as the backroom staff, and in that regard, this comes as positive news for everyone associated with the Red Devils.
