Manchester City are leading the race to sign Benfica star Darwin Nunez as Manchester United trail behind
According to Daily Star (h/t ESPN), Manchester United are behind in the race to sign Darwin Nunez from Benfica as Manchester City believe they are ahead in the race.
The Uruguayan sensation has been in good form for the Portuguese club this season and was on show again in mid-week as he bagged two incredible goals against La Liga giants Barcelona in the Champions League.
Those two strikes against the La Liga club took his tally to six goals from seven games for the season, and several clubs are now interested in a move for the striker.
Manchester United, Chelsea, Bayern Munich, and Liverpool have all considered a move for the 22-year-old, but it is Manchester City who believe they can get a deal over the line.
The Citizens are understood to be enjoying a great relationship with the Portuguese outfit as they have completed deals for the likes of Ederson and Ruben Dias over the last four years.
In fact, City have also informed Benfica of their interest in the Uruguayan, who is said to have a release clause worth £125million. While Guardiola and co. are confident of landing him for £70million, this would be a blow for United. Edinson Cavani will be out of contract next summer while Real Madrid are also lining up a January move for him.

Cristiano Ronaldo will turn 37 next year while Jesse Lingard will be a free agent next summer, and Anthony Martial could be offloaded by the club in the coming months. Thus, a striker could be useful and if they fail to land Erling Haaland from Borussia Dortmund, losing Darwin Nunez will be a huge loss.
Thus, while City are marching ahead with a move, United would be hoping the door is not closed on signing the 22-year-old centre-forward yet.
