Real Madrid are eyeing a deal for Manchester United star Edinson Cavani in January
According to Spanish publication El Nacional (h/t The Sun), Manchester United star Edinson Cavani is on the radar of Real Madrid regarding a possible January move.
There have been speculations surrounding the future of Cavani at Old Trafford ever since the club made additions to their frontline this summer. The Red Devils raked in the likes of Jadon Sancho from Borussia Dortmund and Cristiano Ronaldo from Juventus to increase the competition within the squad and boost the quality in the ranks.
However, this has also had negative effects on the Uruguayan ace. The 34-year-old signed for the club last season and went on to become the main striker towards the end of last year’s campaign. This also led to the centre-forward signing a year-long extension on his deal.
While that was the case, he has not managed a single start this season. Mason Greenwood’s good start to the season coupled with Ronaldo’s arrival and subsequent rich form has kept Cavani out of the starting line-up. While he has made a couple of substitute appearances, the 34-year-old has only managed 62 minutes on the pitch.
With competition rife within United’s ranks, Real Madrid are now plotting a move for the Uruguayan. The Spanish giants were linked with the forward earlier this summer but failed to get a deal over the line.
Although they were also interested in the likes of Radamel Falcao and Pierre Emerick Aubameyang, Cavani is now the number 1 priority for the club, according to El Nacional (h/t The Sun).

If United do not plan on offering the striker an extension before January, he will be allowed to talk to foreign clubs over a free transfer next summer. In fact, a knock-down price for a move in the winter window might also be on the cards, something Madrid are targeting.
However, it remains to be seen whether the Old Trafford outfit would be open to letting one of their frontline stars leave the club mid-way through the season as they look to compete actively on all fronts this season.
