Teddy Sheringham thinks Cristiano Ronaldo could convince Paul Pogba to sign new Manchester United contract
Speaking at Maurice Newman’s annual charity Golf Day at Stapleford Abbotts Golf Course (h/t Manchester Evening News), Teddy Sheringham stated that new signings like Cristiano Ronaldo can influence Paul Pogba into signing a new Manchester United contract.
The France international is in the final year of his contract. If he doesn’t renew his deal, foreign clubs will be free to negotiate terms over a free transfer with him from January of next year.
There is no doubt that United fans would want a player of his calibre and quality at the club for as long as possible. Still just 28, Pogba has started the season in excellent form, registering 7 assists in 4 league games.
And Sheringham, who won the treble with Manchester United in 1999, believes that big-name signings could convince Pogba into staying at the club beyond 2022.
Pogba to leave?
“Top players want to play with top players. That might be why Paul Pogba has been worried for the last couple of years that they haven’t been signing top players, but they have this year.”
Since the beginning of 2020, United have brought in superstars such as Bruno Fernandes, Jadon Sancho, Raphael Varane, and most recently, Cristiano Ronaldo. These players have, in turn, elevated United’s title credentials.
“Bruno Fernandes has been there for a while now and he looks like a top player for me, Raphael Varane coming in, he’s obviously a top player and when you get someone like Ronaldo, even though he’s probably past his best, he’s still a top player. So it could influence Pogba’s decision to stay.”
United would not want to lose a player like the former Juventus man, especially on a free transfer considering they agreed to pay a then-record fee of £93.2million for him to the Old Lady in 2016.

This will be a situation to keep an eye on and could well be the big story for next year’s transfer windows. But fans would hope that the player signs a new deal considering there is an exciting project in the works under Solskjaer.
