Manchester United star Paul Pogba reveals secret to how Cristiano Ronaldo keeps performing at a high level

Manchester United midfielder Paul Pogba has revealed the secret to how Cristiano Ronaldo keeps performing at a high level despite being in the twilight of his playing career. The centre-forward played a crucial role in helping his side get over the line in a highly contested Premier League fixture against Tottenham Hotspur yesterday.

The Manchester club beat Tottenham 3-2 in a league clash yesterday at Old Trafford with the help of Ronaldo’s hat-trick. The three goals saw him become FIFA’s all-time top goalscorer which is a nod to how he has performed at a high level for quite a long period of time. Now, his Man United teammate Pogba has weighed in on why the striker has been consistent for so long.

Speaking in the post-match interview with MUTV (h/t Manchester United official website), Pogba has conveyed that Cristiano’s motivation and desire to keep breaking records helps him maintain his consistency at the top. The midfielder has added that the centre-forward wants to be the best player in the game, which assists him in having the drive to perform regularly at a high level.

“We know Cristiano Ronaldo and what he can do. He did what he does best. He’s a record-breaker, that is his motivation. He wants to be number one and be the best and he shows it in the game and training always.”

More to follow?

The hattrick saw Ronaldo increase his goal tally to 18 this season with three assists alongside it across all competitions. The Portuguese international has been decisive for us multiple times this campaign despite the struggles on the way.

Those numbers are pretty impressive, especially considering his recent slump for us. However, time and time again, we have seen how his motivation to get better helps him get through the challenges that he has faced throughout his career.

Pogba did not stop there as he also slammed claims that Ronaldo was being an issue for the Red Devils. Speaking in a separate interview with BBC Sport (h/t Manchester Evening News), the central midfielder was adamant that the former Real Madrid man was never a problem for them since he is the best striker in football history.

“We hurt them at the right times and Ronaldo did what he does best. He has never been a problem. You have the best striker in history in our team, he cannot be a problem. Today the performance from him and all the team was very brilliant. Everybody knows Cristiano – there’s no need to talk about him. That’s what he does. He didn’t play in the last game, but he comes back and scores three goals.”

More Manchester United News

Perhaps Pogba can himself take a leaf out of Ronaldo’s book here, given how the ex-Juventus man has struggled to fulfil his potential at Old Trafford. He certainly has the potential to be one of the greats of the game, but for some reason, his spell at Man United hasn’t quite matched expectations.

Nevertheless, this performance comes at a perfect time for us, considering we face Atletico Madrid next in the Champions League. The second leg of the round of 16 tie would be a crucial encounter as we look to qualify for the next stage. Ronaldo’s terrific display would be a major boost since he has been a thorn for Diego Simeone in the past. Let’s hope to see a repeat on Tuesday as well to get us into the quarter-finals.
