Transfer News: Manchester United sanctioned Anthony Martial sale this summer

According to Daily Mirror (h/t Sport Bible), Anthony Martial is on the ‘chopping block at Manchester United after Joel Glazer sanctioned a sale for him this summer.

Olympique Lyonnaise were interested in bringing the Frenchman back to France. However, the player refused the move on deadline day to stay at Old Trafford.

Martial’s days at United may well be numbered considering the attacking depth that the club possesses now. As if Mason Greenwood and Edinson Cavani weren’t competition enough, the club went out and got in Cristiano Ronaldo this summer.

The Frenchman’s contract expires in the summer of 2024, which means that United can still have an upper hand in negotiations considering they wouldn’t be under the threat of losing him on a free transfer.

Martial on the chopping block?

At 25, he is still at an age where he can get his career back on track. He had a pretty good 2019/20 season which showed his true potential.

However, his performances during the last campaign made a large part of the fanbase some amount of faith in him. Speaking to Betfair (h/t Sport Bible) Dimitar Berbatov, a former United striker himself, also fears for Martial at Old Trafford after the signing of Ronaldo from Juventus.

“I actually think Martial is going to have a big question mark over his head and I’m probably more concerned about that. Rashford is someone who also is born and bred in Manchester and I think he’ll be fine and Cavani also has his place and that’s why I’m curious to see how he’s going to rotate everyone.”

A lot will be made clear until January next year when Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is more certain about his pecking order in the attack. As for now, fans would see Martial as someone who is expandable.
