Transfer News: PSG held talks with Cristiano Ronaldo before Manchester United return
According to French outlet Le10Sport (h/t Football365), PSG held talks with Cristiano Ronaldo before his return to Manchester United.
Mauricio Pochettino was in conversation with Ronaldo’s agent, Jorge Mendes, during Juventus’ interest in PSG marksman, Mauro Icardi. However, the French giants opted against making any bid.
The report mentions that Paris Saint-Germain were assessing a swap transfer deal involving Ronaldo and Icardi, but decided to look at other targets. Moreover, they were apparently aware of Man United’s interest in the Portuguese.
As it turned out, the 36-year-old striker joined Manchester United this summer, 12 years after leaving the club for Real Madrid. There is a buzz of positivity around Old Trafford ever since Ronaldo’s signing was announced.
Ronaldo and Messi at PSG?
But it is interesting to imagine how things may have turned out if PSG managed to land Ronaldo. The Ligue 1 side ultimately ended the transfer window with Lionel Messi’s addition to their squad.
If PSG did bring in Ronaldo, would we have seen Messi and Ronaldo playing on the same team for the first time in their professional careers? That is something we may never get to know anymore.
But United fans could not be less bothered by it. They have their celebrated legend back at Old Trafford and even if he is not in his prime, the five-time Ballon d’Or winner is still operating at an elite level.
