Cristiano Ronaldo jerseys cannot stop selling as Manchester United fans splurge record amount within 12 hours
According to LovetheSales.com (h/t Fox Sports), Cristiano Ronaldo jerseys with the famous No. 7, have broken the Premier League record for shirt sales within the first 12 hours of a player’s number being made official.
Edinson Cavani gave up his number 7 kit in a generous gesture, and the Portuguese superstar is now all set to don the same kit number that made him an icon at Old Trafford under Sir Alex Ferguson.
Fans have apparently splurged £32.5million on Ronaldo’s No. 7 kits within the first 12 hours, which pips even Jack Grealish’s kit sales at Man City. However, this will not pay back the £12.85million fee United paid for Ronaldo to Juventus.
Football teams do not get to keep the entire revenue generated from shirt sales. The Red Devils signed a record £750million decade-long deal with Adidas in 2014.
CR7 is back!
While the terms of the deal are kept confidential, United are unlikely to pocket more than 10% from the kit sales. Instead of diving deeper into the numbers, it is safe to say that United won’t make a lot of money from this.
According to Dr Dan Plumley, a senior lecturer in sport finance at Sheffield Hallam University who spoke on BBC (h/t Fox Sports) recently, the Red Devils are likely to pocket not more than £5 per shirt.
It is obvious that shirt sales aren’t the only reason United signed Ronaldo for. The 36-year-old is still banging in goals for fun and can be a potent goalscorer on a regular basis for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s team.
