According to Portuguese transfer source Pedro Almedia on Twitter (h/t Express), Manchester United have been dealt a blow in their pursuit of Wolverhampton Wanderers midfielder Ruben Neves.

The Portuguese maestro is one of the Premier League’s best midfielders and has steadily gone about making a name for himself at the Molineux. Adding him to the United roster would have given Ole Gunnar Solskjaer a dynamic presence in the middle of the park.

As it stands, United are not the only team keen on Neves. Tottenham Hotspur, now managed by former Wolves boss Nuno Espirito Santo are in negotiations regarding a £34million move for the player. With the summer transfer window set to close at 11 pm BST tonight, it remains to be seen if Neves will end up at the Lane.

Spurs experienced a slow start to the summer but have seen matters pick up in recent weeks. Currently sitting pretty at the top of the table, adding Neves into the mix will make them stronger. It could have a direct impact on United who are also keen to be involved in the title race.

Despite speculation surrounding his future, Neves has played all three of Wolves Premier League games this season. He was impressive against United at the weekend and was also involved in a bit of controversy following a tackle by Paul Pogba.

The prospect of signing Neves is something that would have done United much good. While Fred and Scott McTominay are industrious players, they lack the dynamism when it comes to going forward or contributing to attacks.

Adding Neves into the mix will change it. The 24-year-old is an excellent passer of the ball and also packs a punch from distance. The Red Devils appear to have missed a trick in landing a rather nifty player who could have brought something new to the table.

Santo is well aware of Neves’ talents having managed him at Porto and Wolves. A reunion could be on the cards should a deal be agreed upon tonight. United might be about to miss out on a very good player who would have added much to their midfield.
