According to The Independent, Manchester United will pay Italian giants Juventus £12.86m for the transfer of Cristiano Ronaldo.

The Red Devils shocked the footballing world when they announced the 36-year-old’s return to Old Trafford last week. Despite turning 36, Ronaldo remains one of the best players in the world and is a handy addition to Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s squad.

Juventus have now confirmed that United are liable to pay Ronaldo’s original fee spread out over a five-year period. Another £6.85m could be added to the tally in potential add-ons. All things said and done, United may fork out a grand total of £19.72m for the Portuguese legend’s services.

The deal is a fair one given the time Ronaldo has left at the top level. At 36 most players will be calling it a day but not Ronaldo who has signed a two-year contract with Manchester United.

He topped the Serie A scoring charts last season, having continued to find the back of the net despite a frustrating season in Turin. Now back ‘home’ at United, he has the opportunity to rekindle the Red Devils’ flame as England’s premier side.

A five-time Ballon d’Or winner, Ronaldo was linked with a move to Manchester City before committing to an Old Trafford return. He was originally at the club from 2003 to 2009.

Former manager Sir Alex Ferguson played a key role behind the scenes in the transfer while Ole Gunnar Solskjaer also pushed for Ronaldo’s return to Old Trafford. Rio Ferdinand, too, stepped up and did is bit to help ensure the deal gets over the line.

All the effort has since paid off and Ronaldo is now set for a second innings in Red.

Alongside Raphael Varane, Jadon Sancho and Tom Heaton, Ronaldo’s addition gives the side enough firepower and depth to sustain a season-long challenge for the title. While the summer has been productive, it will count for little if the results on the pitch do not meet epectations.
