Cristiano Ronaldo takes multi-million pay cut to re-join Man United

Cristiano Ronaldo returns to Manchester United after 12 years.

Cristiano Ronaldo agrees reduced wages to sign for Manchester United from Juventus

According to a report by Daily Mail (h/t Mirror), Cristiano Ronaldo is believed to have taken a pay cut of around £6million in wages to join Manchester United from Juventus this summer.

The Red Devils announced the signing of Ronaldo on their social media accounts to a blockbuster reception. The details of his United contract are now coming to the fore.

The 36-year-old Portuguese was in the final 12 months of his Juventus deal – a contract that saw him take home £500,000 every week. This amounts to an eyebrow-raising £26million every year.

However, Jorge Mendes ensured reduces for Ronaldo at United in order to sanction a move to Old Trafford. Despite that reduction in his salary, he is still United’s highest-paid player at £385,000-a-week in wages.

Worth the money?

This trumps David de Gea’s salary, who earns around £375,000 every week according to Spotract (h/t Mirror). At 36, it seems reasonable for United to not match Ronaldo’s wages in Turin.

It is also a move that does not really shake the club’s wage structure a lot, considering he has overtaken de Gea’s wage packet by just a slender margin. But make no mistake, it is still a bumper contract for the 2016 UEFA Euro winner.

He could be the piece Ole Gunnar Solskjaer needs to complete his trophy-winning puzzle at Manchester United. The Norwegian is yet to win silverware at the club as a manager despite having come close on several occasions.
