Manchester United have reached an agreement to sign Cristiano Ronaldo

Manchester United have announced the signing of Cristiano Ronaldo from Juventus. The Portuguese superstar is all set to return to the team where he made his name in the footballing world.

According to talkSport’s Alex Crook on Twitter (h/t The Express), Manchester United were in touch with superagent Jorge Mendes, set to make a sensational late swoop for Cristiano Ronaldo.

The 36-year-old remains amongst the best players in the world and is on his way out of Juventus this summer. A return to Manchester has now been confirmed and it is not to Manchester City, who were interested in a deal for him.

A move to our arch-rivals would have been ill-advised given the standing Ronaldo retains amongst the Old Trafford faithful. A number of fans already expressed their distaste regarding the potential switch to The Etihad.

The Portuguese ace developed from a prospect into a world-class player at Old Trafford under Sir Alex Ferguson. Ronaldo spent six years at Old Trafford, making 292 appearances across all competitions, scoring 118 goals and assisting 69 more.

A majority of the fans have wanted a return for Ronaldo Old Trafford ever since he left the club for Real Madrid back in 2009. It is fair to say that the transfer is worth the wait, now that it has happened.

United were clearly not keen to see one of their favourite sons sport the colours of an arch-rival.

Italian journalist Fabrizio Romano also confirmed that Ronaldo made up his mind to leave Juventus this summer. The player already bid his goodbyes to his teammates and was looking for a new challenge.

While Manchester City were in conversations, they did not make an official bid. It is now too late to change that, with Ronaldo headed to Old Trafford.
