Transfer News: Manchester United could make a move for Erling Haaland next January
According to Marca (h/t The Mirror), Manchester United have been handed a major boost in their efforts to land Borussia Dortmund striker Erling Haaland next January.
The Norwegian wonderkid is already one of the best forwards in Europe and looks set to have a prolific career in the years to come. Haaland has already scored five goals and assisted three more in his first four games for the Germans this season.
The 21-year-old has been on United’s radar for some time now. However, any attempt to sign him this season would have seen United pay a massive transfer fee. That might be different when the window opens this January.
Haaland was widely touted to have a £64million release clause that comes into effect next summer. According to the report, it becomes active the moment the window opens in January, paving the way for United to make their move.
Valued at £130m, Haaland’s numbers speak for themselves. Landing him for half the asking price would be a stupendous piece of business that could go down in history.
United however are unlikely to have an easy route in landing Haaland. A host of Europe’s top clubs could be set to make their move at the turn of the new year. Whether we will eventually come out on top remains to be seen.
In Edinson Cavani, Mason Green and Anthony Martial, United have enough strikers at their disposal this season. Cavani however is not getting younger and is also out of contract at the end of the season.
Despite his performances, the Uruguayan at 34 is not a long-term option and United will need to address it one way or the other next year.
