Manchester United are behind Atalanta in the chase of Pape Matar Sarr
According to Sky Italia (h/t Tribalfootball), Manchester United have been pipped by Atalanta in the race to sign Metz star Pape Matar Sarr this summer as the Italian club have already submitted an offer.
The Serie A side are keen on getting their hands on the 18-year-old and have already tabled a bid of €20million for the midfielder. However, Metz have rejected the bid as their valuation of the player is €40million– double of what the Italian club offered the French outfit.
The Metz president was expected in London on Monday to hold talks with clubs that were interested in signing the player this summer. According to Sky Sports Kaveh Solhekol (h/t The Express), president Bernard Serin did touch down at Stanstead airport on Monday, but there is no certainty on which clubs he engaged in talks with.
Italian journalist Fabrizio Romano cleared it up by talking on the YouTube channel of the United Stand (h/t The Express), saying that the Red Devils are only ‘scouting’ the 18-year-old for now.
However, given that Atalanta already tabled an offer, the Old Trafford outfit might now spring into action with a bid to avoid losing a midfielder as talented as the Frenchman.
Sarr joined Metz last season and racked up 22 league appearances and has shown that he can play anywhere across the midfield line.

Although the Red Devils already possess the likes of Paul Pogba, Bruno Fernandes, Donny van de Beek, Scott McTominay, Fred, and Nemanja Matic in their ranks, only two of them are below the age of 25 and Sarr could work as a long-term resolution to the club’s midfield.
The teenager made his international debut in March this year, and it might not be long before he is seen on the world stage at club level, a platform United can certainly provide him if they do go on to sign him.
