Transfer News: Manchester United to experience dual benefit thanks to PSG’s pursuit of Lionel Messi

According to the transfer news section of the Daily Mail and The Athletic (Subscription Required), Manchester United have been handed a double transfer boost thanks to Paris Saint-Germain’s pursuit of Lionel Messi.

The French giants appear to be leading the race for the footballing legend who is now a free agent. With Barcelona unable to afford him, the 34-year-old could finally don a different jersey this summer. While United are also in the fray, PSG are leading the race to land the player.

While missing out on one of the game’s greatest players is never a good sign, there is a silver lining for the Red Devils. This is because Messi moving to the Parc des Princes will aid their pursuit of Eduardo Camavinga and retaining Paul Pogba.

Pogba to leave United this summer?

PSG moving for Messi could see them backtrack in their interest in Eduardo Camavinga. The youngster was keen on a move to Paris but with the French giants wavering, Untied could step in and make their move.

Camavinga is in the final year of his contract and Rennes run the risk of losing him for a free next year. With a new contract nowhere close to being signed, United could attempt to force Rennes’s hand this summer. With PSG potentially out of the way, it could hand us the initiative.

It isn’t just in the matter of incoming that the Red Devils could have an advantage. In fact, the latest developments could aid their efforts of keeping Paul Pogba at the club. The Frenchman is also in the final year of his contract and is being linked with a move to PSG.

It has been suggested that PSG could tempt him into running down his contract and grab him for nothing in a year’s time. It does, however, give us a year to turn around our fortunes and convince the player that his future lies in Manchester.

While there is a promise, there is also risk. The worst outcome would be for both Camavinga and Pogba to join PSG for free next summer. The French giants have brought in some excellent Bosman signings this summer. Whether they are able to convince the French duo to do the same in a year’s time remains to be seen.

Until then, however, United are very much in the game. The onus is on us to seize the initiative.
