Manchester United expected to announce Raphael Varane jersey number today

According to Express, Manchester United could announce the jersey number for Raphael Varane today. The new signing will be expected to link up with his new mates soon and for that, the club will need to assign him a squad number.

It was a pleasant surprise as to how smoothly and fast United acted on their interest in Varane. They knew that his contract with Real Madrid was in the final year after ten seasons in the Spanish capital, and they pushed ahead to get their man.

As of now, a deal in principle has been agreed upon with several formalities still left. Medicals and contract signings are due as the player is set to fly to Manchester today. Those are expected to be done soon as Varane is set to be unveiled as a United player and then link up with the rest of the squad as they prepare for the season opener.

It is understood that United could unveil Varane’s jersey number today. There are not a lot of free squad numbers left and it could be that he takes a number from an existing player who might leave the club. Phil Jones’ no. 4 and Andreas Pereira’s no. 15 are possible options with both players mooted for an exit. Jersey no. 16 is also free and was last worn by Michael Carrick.
