Manchester United may struggle to get rid of Anthony Martial as the race for Ering Haaland heats up
According to the Mirror, whether Manchester United can part ways with Anthony Martial could help determine if they land can Erling Haaland.
The Red Devils have shown that they mean business this summer and have brought in world-class reinforcements. Jadon Sancho has already been unveiled while Raphael Varane is set to undergo a medical. One name that would, however, ramp up excitement to another level is that of Haaland.
The Norwegian is a goalscoring machine and will leave Borussia Dortmund sooner or later. With Edinson Cavani not getting younger and Mason Greenwood still developing, it is imperative that we bring in another dependable striker. One major factor that could influence our move for Haaland is whether we can sell Anthony Martial.
The Frenchman is, on his day, a joy to behold. However, his lack of consistency has been a major source of frustration at Old Trafford. The 25-year-old enjoyed a stellar season in 2019/20 and looked to have turned a corner. However, he went on to have an extremely poor 2020/21 campaign, scoring just seven times in all competitions.
The arrival of Sancho will now be another obstacle in the Frenchman’s way in the upcoming campaign. This has raised questions regarding his long-term future at Old Trafford. It is fair to say that landing a new striker could be his death knell as a United player.
Martial has a fan in the upper echelons of the United management in Joel Glazer. The American has an excellent opinion of the player and has even compared him to footballing legend Pele. While Ole Gunnar Solskjaer does have a say in transfers, he could have a hard time convincing the club to part ways with Martial.
Whether this will have a direct impact on our pursuit of Haaland remains to be seen. After all, Haaland will not come cheap and with Mino Raiola calling the shots, a hefty agent fee could also be needed.
