Manchester United sign Paul McShane to coach U-23s
According to Mirror, Manchester United have signed Paul McShane to play for and coach the U-23s. The 35-year-old defender will take on this special role after leaving Rochdale. He earned his coaching badges during his playing days.
McShane is an academy graduate of United. He went on loan twice to Walsall and Brighton following which he was signed by West Brom. A journeyman through England, McShane has played for a host of clubs such as Sunderland and Hull City too.
His last stint was at Rochdale, where he spent two seasons. It was only at Hull and Reading that he spent the most time. McShane has also been capped 33 times by Ireland. During that time, he managed to get his coaching qualifications.
Now, McShane joins the United U-23s in a dual role. He will mostly be involved in coaching and will only play when deemed necessary. He will not be a part of the senior squad, but will play a role similar to that of Lee Grant. Head of Academy Nick Cox explained the decision behind this appointment.
“This new role was carefully considered and adds yet another level of support for our players in helping them to play at the highest level possible. We believe that Paul is the perfect candidate. He arrives as an extremely highly recommended coach but also clearly still has a lot left to give on the pitch. This unique combination is invaluable for our Under-23s team and will further drive the professional standards of the group.”
