According to El Confidencial (h/t Express), Manchester United are ready to up the ante when it comes to landing Real Madrid defender Raphael Varane this summer.

The Frenchman is the club’s top defensive target and is an excellent choice to partner Harry Maguire in the Red Devils defence. Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is determined to land the defender and United are now set to double his current wages should he make the switch to Old Trafford.

At 28, Varane is in his prime and one of the best centre-backs in world football. Having won it all at the Bernabeu, he is now ready for a new challenge. He is keen on moving out and has earmarked the Premier League as his next destination.

According to the report, Varane currently earns £170,000 per week at Real. He now could earn £340,000 if he moves to United. This will take him into the upper echelons of the club’s top earners. In fact, he will only be slightly behind David de Gea in the club’s wage bracket.

If the offer is real, it shows the seriousness United are currently approaching the transfer window with. Money talks in football and United appear determined to land their man. If a deal does fall through, it will not be because the club is not ready to splash the cash.

Real Madrid president Florentino Perez is now ready to part ways with the defender. With Sergio Ramos already having left, Real could be without their first-choice centre-back pairing from the past few seasons.

Real, for their part, want £52m for the player. A tall order given that his contract runs out next year. Having already gone big on Jadon Sancho, it is debatable if the Red Devils will pay what Real are seeking. They may however not have a choice in the matter and could have to accept a lower fee of about £42m, lest they want to lose him for free in a year’s time.

Landing Varane will be nothing short of a coup for United. Coupled with Sancho, Solskjaer will have a strong squad at his disposal for the upcoming campaign. The Norwegian will have no excuses if the Red Devils end another season trophyless.
