Manchester United starlet Mason Greenwood explained why he took on the iconic No. 11 shirt (h/t official site). Club legends like Ryan Giggs and George Best have worn the same number in their heydays and thrilled the fans with their skill and goals.

Greenwood has come a long way since making his debut for the side back in 2019. The lanky forward went on to establish himself as a key member of the side over the 2019-20 season. Post the pandemic enforced break, he returned in better shape and finished the season with a flurry.

Mason Greenwood was experiencing his sophomore season blues as he was failing to reach the heights of his debut season. His goals and assists had dried up to the point where he was no longer a regular starter. However, over the second half, he found his lost touch and found goals as well as assists with ease.

Over the seasons, he has worn a few numbers such as the 54 when he started out. Then he took the 26 in 2019. However, he picked out the iconic 11 last season and now explained why he did so.

“It’s a great and an iconic number at Manchester United. That’s one of the reasons why I picked it. I’m so proud to wear the shirt. Obviously, you’ve got so many players down the line, like Ryan Giggs who has worn it for many years. It’s a big ask to wear that shirt, following in the footsteps. It’s a challenge I’ll take on and hopefully do my best.”

Quite obviously he is miles away from getting to achieve that Giggs did at United but the signs and talent are there. Greenwood looks more of a natural goalscorer and given the trajectory he is on, it wouldn’t be surprising if he goes on to be a star at the club.
