Transfer News: Manchester United eye Cristian Romero as Varane alternative
According to transfer news from Daily Star, Manchester United have kept Cristian Romero as an alternative for Raphael Varane. While Varane remains United’s primary choice, the club are aware of the possibility of missing out on him. That is why they have kept the €60m-rated defender from Atalanta as a backup.
Manchester United want a new central defender this season are have identified Varane as the ideal choice. Despite the optimism, there is also caution from United’s end. They want to avoid a repeat of what happened in 2015 when they missed out on Sergio Ramos.
That is why they are not putting all their eggs in one basket. In Romero, they have a solid backup plan if the Varane deal collapses. United are keen to offer €45m for him but Atalanta could demand some figure around €60m. The club are likely to sign Romero on a permanent deal from Juventus midway through a two-year loan.

However, one shouldn’t really be surprised as the talented defender is among the best young defenders in Serie A.
