Manchester United ‘very close’ to sealing a transfer for this La Liga superstar

Transfer News: Manchester United edging closer to Raphael Varane signing

According to AS journalist Edu Cornago (h/t The Express), Raphael Varane is ‘very close’ to joining Manchester United in the summer.

The Real Madrid defender ‘could be signed for a fee’ in the region of £40million to £50million. Varane is in the last year of his contract at Santiago Bernabeu. While the club wants to keep him, a renewal seems unlikely as of now.

That makes the situation suitable for United. If Madrid don’t part ways with the Frenchman this summer, they stand a chance of losing him on a free transfer next year.

And he could well be playing his football at Old Trafford next season, with United strongly linked with the 28-year-old French international. Cornago tweeted (translation as found on The Express):

“The Varane-United agreement is very close to being produced. Varane welcomes the option of going to Manchester. In Madrid, he is looking for a sports project that, for the moment, does not give him.”

Varane’s trophy cabinet is enough to prove his winning pedigree. With multiple La Liga and UEFA Champions League titles under his belt, the 2018 FIFA World Cup winner with France can help Ole Gunnar Solskjaer break his trophy duck.

The Norwegian is yet to win silverware at the club and came closest to getting his hands on a trophy in the UEFA Europa League final, which they lost to Villarreal.

If signed, the former Lens centre-back can present himself as a dependable partner for Harry Maguire in the Red Devils’ defence. On top of that, there will be increased competition in that area alongside Eric Bailly and Victor Lindelof.
