Rio Ferdinand urges Manchester United against making a move for Eduardo Camavinga
Speaking on Vibe with Five (h/t Manchester Evening News), Manchester United legend Rio Ferdinand has urged the club against making a move for French wonderkid Eduardo Camavinga.
The 18-year-old is amongst the best young midfielders in European football. However, Ferdinand believes the teenager is not what United need. In fact, he goes on to add that the club is better off making a move for Declan Rice over Camavinga.
The English international is on United’s radar. However, with West Ham United holding out in excess of £90million, a move for him this summer seems out of the question.
Ferdinand admits that he has not really seen much of Camavinga but believes the talent the youngster possesses is beyond doubt. After all, not every teenager goes on to have a man of the match performance against Paris Saint-Germain on his debut.
“I’ve not seen enough of him if I’m honest. I’ve seen a bit of him, his debut against PSG where he got man of the match, unreal.”
The United ace’s primary concern appears to be Camavinga’s readiness to play an immediate role in the club’s first XI. Ferdinand has gone on to compare his predicament to that of another gifted youngster, Amad Diallo. The Ivorian has impressed but is still some way off from becoming a first-team regular.
“Talent? Obviously. Is he going to come in and effect the team right now and become a star, or is he going to come in and be a bit like an Amad, who comes in for £40m but is nowhere near the starting 11?”
Despite Ferdinand’s concerns, United should do all they can to get Camavinga. The 18-year-old could emerge as a world-class player in the years to come and it is imperative that we land strike when the iron is hot. Unlike Diallo, Camavinga is already a first-team regular at Rennes and has significant experience for a player of his age.
More so he has also made his bow for the French national team. Given that the World Champions have a plethora of talent on their roster, it is no mean feat.

While Rice is admittedly an excellent player, it makes little sense for us to meet West Ham’s valuation. Camavinga meanwhile has just one year left on his contract and could be available at a knockdown price this summer. There are more points in favour of us signing the young Frenchman than Rice.
