David de Gea aiming to stay and fight for his spot at Manchester United
According to ESPN (h/t The Metro), Manchester United star David de Gea is keen to stay put at the club this summer and fight for the starting spot next season.
The Spanish veteran began their last campaign as Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s first-choice shot-stopper. However, unlike previous seasons, he saw his understudy Dean Henderson chip away at a considerable amount of game time throughout the season.
De Gea regained his spot for the Europa League final but had a night to forget in the loss to Villarreal. The Spaniard not only failed to save a single spot-kick but also missed the decisive one as United went out on penalties.
United signed former Academy starlet Tom Heaton last week as back-up. This could suggest that one of Henderson or De Gea will leave the club this summer. The latter has no interest in being that man and wants to stay at the club to fight for his spot.
The 30-year-old is the club’s highest earner and has three more years to run on his mammoth £375,000-a-week deal. It is debatable if he is worth the fuss anymore and in any case, it is difficult to see any side match the wages he gets at Old Trafford.
Henderson for his part is unwilling to spend another season as a backup. He has attracted attention from both Arsenal and Tottenham Hotspur.
De Gea is currently at a crossroads in his career, both at the club and international levels. He has played second fiddle to Unai Simon for the Spanish national side at this summer’s Euros. It will not have helped his case that Athletic Bilbao ace starred in the penalty shootout against Switzerland.

Whether United agree with De Gea’s decision is another matter. According to the Daily Star, the Red Devils are looking at the possibility of loaning out the player this summer. It could pave the way for Henderson to establish himself as the club’s new No.1.
