Manchester United could finally land Raphael Varane for £42m plus add ons

Speaking on the El Bunker podcast (h/t The Express), Spanish journalist Jorge Calabreshas revealed that Manchester United could finally be on the verge of landing Real Madrid star Raphael Varane this summer.

The 28-year-old is one of the best defenders in world football and looks set to leave the Bernabeu after a decade with the club. During this time, he won a number of honours and developed an excellent partnership with Spanish legend Sergio Ramos.

That is exactly what United are seeking this summer. The Red Devils need a new centre-back who can form a formidable partnership with skipper Harry Maguire. This could give Ole Gunnar Solskjaer the base he needs to build a championship-winning side.

Manchester United are keen on signing Raphael Varane.

According to the report, United could land Varane for around £42million plus add-ons. It is a fair price for a player who is one of the best in the world. Moreover, at 28, Varane is in the prime of his career.

The French international looks set to be offered a five-year deal that will net him around £200k per week well into his 30s. While his resale value will diminish by the time the contract expires, Varane will have given United five quality years at the highest level.

Given that top-of-the-line defenders can be game-changers, it is a worthwhile investment for the Red Devils to make. Hopefully, the deal will go through sooner rather than later.

Varane was expected to take time off after France’s shock exit from Euro 2020 to consider his options for the future. However, with the way United’s interest is progressing, the 28-year-old could be forced into making a decision soon.

It would prove to be vindication for United, who have been tracking the player for more than a decade now. It would appear we are closer than ever to landing our man.

United are also keeping track of La Liga duo Jules Kounde and Pau Torres. However, they have both slipped down the priority list of late. Having landed Jadon Sancho, bringing in Varane will be an excellent way for us to start the transfer window.
