Manchester United seeking to bring in Pau Torres in addition to Raphael Varane
According to Manchester Evening News, Manchester United look set to sign Pau Torres in addition to French ace Raphael Varane this summer.
With the Jadon Sancho saga coming to a close, the Red Devils are now free to strengthen other areas of the squad. A centre-back is amongst our key requirements this summer and the wishlist is currently being headlined by Real Madrid star Raphael Varane. A deal for the 28-year-old appears to be close to completion, landing United two world-class players in the same window. That does not, however, conclude our search for defensive reinforcements.
According to the report, United wanted a right-back, one centre-back, a right-winger and a central midfielder as they look to win the Premier League next season. They have since been forced to amend their plans thanks to Villarreal’s interest in Eric Bailly. Losing the player would very well see us bring in another defender in addition to Varane.
One of the names on the list is that of Villarreal star Pau Torres. The Spaniard impressed for the Yellow Submarines in last season’s Europa League final and is currently with the Spain squad at the Euros.
Bailly only signed a new three-year contract with United in April. However, in an interview on the eve of the Europa League final, he admitted that an exit could still be on the cards if he does not get regular playtime. (h/t Manchester Evening News)
The scenario could very well work out in United’s favour. This is because Villarreal could be tempted into a loan or swap arrangement involving Bailly and Torres. Landing both Varane and Torres in the same window would be a dream scenario that gives us strength in depth.
Axel Tuanzebe and Teden Mengi are also expected to be loaned out for the whole campaign. Phil Jones also does not appear to have a future at the club and could be allowed to move on. (h/t Manchester Evening News)
