Edinson Cavani reveals why he penned Manchester United extension
According to Manchester Evening News, Manchester United star Edinson Cavani revealed why he chose to stay on at the club until 2022.
The veteran striker joined the Red Devils on a free transfer on deadline day last summer. He has stepped up massively for us since and ended the season as United’s third-highest scorer and the fifth-highest assist getter. (h/t BBC)
The Uruguayan ended the campaign with 10 goals in his last 11 games. This included game-changing performances against AS Roma and also United’s equalizer in the Europa League final.
Leading up to the summer, it appeared that Cavani’s stay at United would be a short one. He originally signed a one-year deal and looked set to return to South America. Thankfully, he performed a U-turn and ended up his extending his terms at Old Trafford until 2022.
Speaking to the press, Cavani admits that being a part of a good team at United is one of the driving reasons to pen an extension. Given how well he has fit in, there is little reason to suspect that he won’t have another excellent season ahead of him.
“I decided to play there for one more year. I think there’s a good team which is one reason to stay.”
The last dance
The 34-year-old has also gone on to admit that there were some discussions with South American teams regarding a transfer. While it may not have happened this summer, he has not ruled out a return in the future.
“There were negotiations. My brother (and agent) had some chats … things that happen in football, they’re normal.”
Currently with the Uruguayan squad for the Copa America, Cavani admits that he is in the final lap of his international career. Next year’s FIFA World Cup will be his final major tournament with La Celeste.
“I think this is the last dance.”
