David de Gea unsure of his future at Manchester United
According to ESPN, Spanish international David de Gea is unsure of what his future holds at Manchester United beyond this summer.
The 30-year-old has been at the club for 10 years now. During that time, he has made 441 appearances, keeping 155 clean sheets across all competitions. (h/t Transfermarkt)
While he did start and end the 2020/21 campaign as the club’s first-choice goalkeeper, it was not smooth sailing as before. Dean Henderson took his spot a number of times and even looked to have ousted him towards the end of the season. However, the Englishman faltered against Liverpool, handing the starting spot back to De Gea.
De Gea still has two years and an extension option on the £375k-a-week contract he signed in September 2019. Despite entering his 30s, he remains keen on playing at the highest level.
The Spaniard is not privy to Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s plans for next season. As things stand, he intends to return to Old Trafford after the European Championship to fight for his place in the starting XI.
According to the report, De Gea is set to seek talks with Solskjaer before the new season starts. He does not appear to have any inclination to stay put if Henderson is confirmed as the Norwegian’s preferred No. 1.
Solskjaer has a number of tough decisions to make this summer. What he does and how that impacts us going forward remains to be seen.
