Rio Ferdinand dismisses the notion of Cristiano Ronaldo returning to Manchester United

According to The Sun, Manchester United legend Rio Ferdinand believes there is no chance that Cristiano Ronaldo will return to Old Trafford this summer.

The 36-year-old is coming off a frustrating season with Juventus that saw them barely scrape through to next season’s Champions League. Ronaldo has one year left on his current deal but doesn’t appear to be ready to see it out.

Despite his age, Ronaldo still continues to deliver. Ronaldo not only topped the Serie A scoring charts but also won the best striker award for the 2020/21 campaign

Rio Ferdinand and Cristiano Ronaldo during their time at United

United have been touted as a potential destination for the Portuguese legend. However, Ferdinand is having none of it. He believes Ronaldo’s chapter at United is over and should be left at that.

“I don’t think Ronaldo will happen.”

Signed by Sir Alex Ferguson, Ronaldo spent six years as a United player between 2003 and 2009. He helped the club to three Premier League titles, the Champions League, the Club World Cup, and the FA Cup. It is fair to say that his brief stay at the Theatre of Dreams was very rewarding for all parties involved.

“That chapter has been written and it’s closed so I don’t think there’s any chance of that happening.”

Ronaldo will lead Portugal’s defence of their European title this month

Having won it all at the club level, Ronaldo is one of the most illustrious players to ever play the game. He gained one over Lionel Messi by leading Portugal to a major title. Repeating the trick this year will cement his place above the Argentine great.

If one ignores the notion of romanticism, the Red Devils are better off ignoring a potential reunion. It is time we look forward and not backwards. If Ferdinand is to be believed, the ‘next Ronaldo’ may already be at United.
